杨茂祥,1965年出生,甘肃会宁人,是一位在书法和根雕艺术领域均有深厚造诣的艺术家。他拥有历史学士学位,毕业于西北师范大学历史系,并获得国家一级书法师和高级工艺设计师的职称。
在书法方面,杨茂祥自1991年起系统学习探索,真、草、篆、隶、行五体通释,各有所长且互生互融。他注重师古不离正宗,笔法兼具碑法骨力与帖学风范,行草书作意态变化丰富,篆书则古朴雅正、沉稳劲健。2018年,他创立了独具个性的“杨体”书法,体系已基本成熟。其作品如《岳阳楼记》选句、《望天门山》等,以象形篆隶和象形草书为特色,融合传统与创新,展现出雄浑之势与时代之光。
在根雕艺术上,自1996年起,杨茂祥将根雕形态融入书法创作,探索两者互生互融。他制作了超过500件原创根雕作品,如《狮》《美人》等,强调自然粗犷与细腻技艺的结合,体现对生命与自然的深刻理解。
杨茂祥的艺术实践强调“外师造化,中得心源”,其作品多次参展并被机构收藏,被誉为在传统基础上实现自我创新的典范。他同时担任中国书画研究院会员、中国东方文化研究会特聘教授等职,被授予“世界贡献功勋艺术家”称号。
Yang Maoxiang, born in 1965 in Huining, Gansu Province, is an artist with profound attainments in both calligraphy and root carving art. He holds a bachelor's degree in history, graduated from the History Department of Northwest Normal University, and has obtained the titles of National First-Class Calligraphy Master and Senior Craft Designer.
In the realm of calligraphy, Yang Maoxiang has been systematically studying and exploring since 1991, mastering the five styles of calligraphy: regular script, cursive script, seal script, official script, and running script, each with its own strengths and intertwined characteristics. He emphasizes adhering to the traditional style and never deviating from the orthodox, combining the strength of the inscriptions on steles and the elegance of calligraphy practice in his brushwork. His running and cursive scripts exhibit rich variations in style, while his seal script is simple, elegant, and robust. In 2018, he founded his unique "Yang Style" calligraphy, which has now become a mature system. His works, such as selected passages from "Notes on Yueyang Tower" and "Looking at Tianmen Mountain," feature pictographic seal and official scripts as well as pictographic cursive scripts, blending tradition and innovation to showcase a powerful momentum and the light of the times.
In the realm of root carving art, since 1996, Yang Maoxiang has integrated the forms of root carving into his calligraphy creations, exploring the mutual integration and coexistence of the two. He has crafted over 500 original root carving works, such as "Lion" and "Beauty", emphasizing the combination of natural ruggedness and delicate craftsmanship, reflecting a profound understanding of life and nature.
Yang Maoxiang's artistic practice emphasizes the principle of "learning from nature externally and deriving inspiration internally". His works have been exhibited multiple times and collected by institutions, and he is hailed as a paradigm of self-innovation on the basis of tradition. He concurrently holds positions such as member of the China Calligraphy and Painting Research Institute and distinguished professor of the China Oriental Culture Research Association, and has been awarded the title of "World Contribution Meritorious Artist".
