Foreword

Superman IS DC. Superman is THE Super Hero. Superman IS comic books.

But he’s so much more.

When I was a kid, I would wait outside my comic bookstore, wait for the doors to open to rush inside and grab a new issue of Superman. To see him save the day once more with his superpowers. When you’re young and first see Superman it’s easy to fall in love with his powers as he has all the cool ones: flight, heat vision, freeze breath, super‑strength, speed, and he’s virtually invulnerable. You want to be Superman and use all his wonderful powers!

But once you get past that, you quickly see the thing that makes us all fall in love with Superman. And that is how human he is.

Despite being an alien from a long‑dead world he captures a piece of us that is so relatable. He is the ultimate outsider but represents the best of us all. And he sees the same in us.Superman came from trauma when his homeworld of Krypton was destroyed, yet he didn’t let that break him down. A lot of heroes have similar backstories full of tragedy, and they turn into darker heroes. Not Clark…

When I write “Clark,” I am reminded that he is a product of second chances. His entire life is a second chance because of the sacrifice that his birth parents Jor‑El and Lara made, and because two people on Earth—Jonathan and Martha Kent—cared about him. And so he always sees the opportunity for second chances for others. Even for someone like Lex Luthor.

You can see this positive outlook in the people that Clark Kent surrounds himself with—the Kents, Lois, Jimmy, Perry White etc. He has one of the best supporting casts of all Super Heroes, full of people who believe the world can be a better place if you just TRY.

I’m honored to be part of Superman’s life. To add to his mythology. In this book you will see the amazing work of so many talented writers and artists who have been inspired by Superman. You will see how Superman really IS comics…

But his influence has moved far beyond the pages of comic books. He inspires people to be the best versions of themselves in our world, too.

Superman teaches us to believe in ourselves. To look up. To always strive for a better tomorrow.

And that is, and always will be, his greatest superpower.
