:《A Necessary Failure: BYD Abandons 5.5 Million-Unit Target》
In September, the most critical month for sprinting toward annual goals in the auto market, BYD has cut its 2025 sales target from 5.5 million to 4.6 million units—a reduction of 900,000, equivalent to the combined annual sales of “NIO, XPeng, and Li Auto.” It seems even BYD can’t keep up the pace.
Compared with its 2024 record of 4.27 million, the new target represents only an 8% increase—the lowest growth in the past five years. In the first eight months of 2025, BYD sold 2.8638 million vehicles, up 23% year-on-year, but only 52% of its original 5.5 million goal. Last year, it had sold 2.3246 million by the same point, achieving 58% of its target.
While Geely has raised its annual target to 3 million, and Chery has announced plans to hit 3.26 million globally to break into the world’s top ten automakers, BYD may have no choice but to say goodbye to hypergrowth and return to a focus on product quality and sustainable development—especially at this critical moment of global expansion.
BYD’s rare move to lower its annual sales target highlights the enormous market pressure on its growth, but it also signals a more balanced stage in China’s NEV market. Chery, Geely, XPeng, and NIO are all showing strong momentum.
